Outdoor Private Lights
KUB's Outdoor Private Lighting program provides security lighting for residential and commercial customers. KUB recently started a program to convert this system, consisting of about 30,000 high-pressure sodium lights, to LED over the next five years.
Lights will be converted to LED through our regular maintenance cycle, and all newly installed lights are LED. These lights are energy efficient, save money for customers, provide a higher quality and longer lasting light, and benefit the environment.

Outdoor Private Lighting FAQs
What is the installation cost for adding an outdoor private light at my residence or business?
Standard installation cost is $75 for the installation of a light on an existing pole. The standard fee for a pole and light installation is $175. Costs may vary for non-standard installations.

What type of outdoor private lights does KUB offer?
KUB currently offers Light Emitting Diode (LED) outdoor private lights. KUB transitioned to only LED lights for new installations as of October 1, 2017. High pressure sodium (HPS) and decorative lights are no longer available. Beginning July 1, 2018, KUB will transition all existing HPS lights to LED lights over the next five years.
Is there monthly fee per light?
Yes, a monthly lease charge is billed per light. Refer to the LS and LED rate schedules on our Residential Rates page for information regarding the cost of energy, maintainence and service fees. The fee is based upon the wattage of the light. Rates change slightly based on monthly fuel adjustment.
Can I have my existing HPS outdoor private light changed to LED before the regular maintenance cycle?
Yes, you can request to exchange your existing HPS outdoor private light for a LED light at a fee of $75 per light.
Why is KUB converting to LED private lights?
KUB has a plan to reduce energy usage and improve the overall quality of lighting within KUB’s service area. LED lights will enable us to provide the same level of lighting or better; while at the same time purchasing less power from TVA. KUB will be replacing all 30,000 lights covered under KUB’s Outdoor Private Lighting Program over a period of five (5) years as lights require maintenance.
Are LED lights better for the environment?
LED lights benefit the environment in many ways:
- Lower energy consumption
- Lower environmental footprint
- Significantly longer lifespan. On average, LEDs last three times as long as the current lights
- Night visibility will be improved due to white light and more direct, focused coverage
