Meter Readers
Do you know how to identify your meter reader? See the below Frequently Asked Questions about KUB’s meter reading policies.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does KUB read its meters, or do contactors?
KUB contracts with Bermex Metering Services to read meters in our service territory.
Do meter readers read every meter?
Every meter is read to calculate the monthly bill, but there are different ways your meter can be read depending on what kind of meter you have:
1. Advanced Meter – this can be read remotely, either completely by radio signals or by a Bermex Metering Services vehicle driving nearby. These will only need a meter reader or technician on site if there is a problem with the meter.
2. Digital or Analog/Standard Meter – these must be read visually by a meter reader.
Isn’t KUB changing everyone’s meters to advanced meters?
KUB began a project in 2016 to upgrade all electric, natural gas, and water meters to advanced meters. This project will take four years to complete, so not all customers will get advanced meters on the same schedule. KUB will still need the services of a contractor to read meters, place notices, perform service work, etc., while the project is underway and for a period of time following its completion. For more information on this project, visit the Meter Modernization Webpage.
How will I know the person on my property is a legitimate meter reader?
All Bermex Metering Services vehicles are marked with both the Bermex Metering Services and KUB Logos. Additionally, Bermex Metering Services employees wear clothing and badges identifying them as an Bermex Metering Services employee. The badge should always be visible and available for inspection upon request. Meter readers should never ask to enter your home or business unless your meter is inside, which should already be coordinated between you and KUB. Clothing guidelines are:
Meter Readers – navy shirts (either short-sleeved or long-sleeved), blue jeans, and a Meter Services high visibility vest.
Meter Service Technicians – light blue, long sleeved button-down shirt, blue jeans, and a Meter Services high visibility vest.
Who do I call if I am unsure that the person on my property is a legitimate meter reader?
Please call KUB at 524-2911.
Are meters read on a set schedule?
Meters are generally read on a schedule, although there may be impacts due to weather, access issues, traffic, personnel changes, etc.
Does the meter reader know where my meter is?
In most cases, yes, however there may be instances where they must look for the meter, such as if there is a new meter reader on your route, or if there are no records of where your meter is located.
