Fall Maintenance for Your Furnace

Before you start your furnace, consider having a licensed heating and air contractor perform a maintenance check to make sure everything is in working order. They will inspect and clean components such as the heat exchanger, blower, vent, ducting, and wiring.

The first time you turn on your furnace, you may smell an odor like burned dust. That’s normal. If you smell a rotten egg odor, that’s natural gas. If you smell gas, call KUB. 

Furnace Check -Up - A licensed heating and air contractor should conduct the following:

• Inspect and clean blower assembly (includes blower housing, blower wheel and motor).
• Lubricate motors on older models. Newer furnaces do not require lubrication.
• Check all venting and vent components.
• Inspect ignition system and safety controls.
• Inspect heat exchanger and clean if necessary.
• Inspect controls, thermostat, wiring and connections.
• Check and clean or replace air filters if necessary.
• Inspect conditioned airflow system (ductwork).
• Operate system and verify proper operation of the unit.
• General check of all components.

Licensing for a heating and air contractor - KUB recommends you consider the following when choosing a licensed contractor to perform this maintenance:

• Contractors should be licensed by local government agencies in your area or the State of TN.
• You can contact your local Inspections Office to verify their license.
• State licenses can be verified on the Tennessee Board of Licensing Contractors website.
